IDYTLM
(I dare you to love me)
Two weeks ago.
“Ralph, I’ve had enough.” Cathy
finally said
“Here we go again. What’s the
problem now? Ralph snickered
“That girl named Marge. I saw you
together.” Cathy sobbed
“Hai! You’re jealous again.
Forget it already.” Ralph said
“No… I’ll end this stupid game
and we’re over!”
“Over? Oh sure!! That’s good.
Let’s split!” Ralph left.
That break up is
still a fresh memory for Cathy. She realized that love is just a game like
basketball as they say. It’s either you win, lose or even a draw. Her thoughts
were interrupted by an unexpected encounter of the new couple.
“Hey Ralph! Isn’t that Cathy,
your ex? The girl named Marge laughed.
“Why are you here?” Cathy asked
“Heh?! This is not your
property!” Marge lost her temper
“Marge, stop it!!” Ralph stopped
Marge
“Why Ralph? Are you afraid to
tell your past girlfriend that you already have a present one?” Marge smiled.
“Marge, we’re just dating. She’s
my past but you’re not my present. Let’s go!” Ralph walked out. Marge followed flirty.
“They don’t have to flaunt their
love in front of my face.” Cathy got her books and walked. As she was walking,
she got bumped by a person.
“Uhh… I’m sorry. I bum…”
“Don’t care!! You blind eyes!!”
The person shouted and went on.
“What?! I already apologized yet
you… Argh!!” this is not my day! Cathy angered.
The
next day… RING!!! The school bell rang.
“Oh no, I’m late again!!!” Cathy
rushed inside the school. She didn’t know that something’s already happening in
their class.
“Class, we have a new classmate.
Come here.” Sir Lawrence announced. “Introduce yourself.” Appeared in the class
platform was the person who bumped Cathy.
“I’m Max from St. Peter high
school. 16 years old.”
“Ok, Max. Your seat will be…
uhmm… the seat near the empty one.” Sir Lawrence said.
“Sir, sorry I’m late!!” Cathy arrived.
“It’s ok but next time.” Sir
Lawrence motioned.
“Ok. (Went to her seat) Huh?
You?!” Cathy was startled.
“Me? Ohh?” Max grinned.
“You!! You’re that person
yesterday.”
“Me? Heh! I remember! You’re that
Blind eyes!” Max snickered.
“Huh? Repeat that or else!!!”
Cathy pounded her fist.
“What? Punch me? You must be
kidding!” Max laughed.
“Haii… JUST! Don’t disturb me...”
Cathy sat quietly.
“Uhmm, Sam explain the kinds of
modals in front of the class before I start my quiz.” Sir Lawrence instructed
Sam.
Sam nodded and went to the
platform. After explaining, she sat down and smiled. She gave Sir Lawrence a
letter that morning.
“Don’t ever dream about him
replying your letter. It’s very impossible for him to like you. You’re just his
student. And we’ll be entering senior high next year so don’t wish for him to
love you.” Nathan snickered. Sam snubbed him.
The
day turned to be a total blizzard for Cathy, she never looked happy being Max”
seatmate who is just texting silently. Samantha (Sam) noticed this.
“Hey Max! Can you be a little
polite? Don’t feel so comfy just because you’re a newbie here” Sam said
“Heh! It’s none of your business,
Loser!” Max snubbed
“Max, shouldn’t you at least
respect us?” Cathy broke her silence.
“Why would I? Get out of my way
you blind eyes!” Max walked
“Hey don’t turn your back from
me!!” Cathy shouted
“Cathy, calm down. Leave him
alone first.” Sam said
“He’s lucky for now!” Cathy
stomped.
“Uhmm, Cathy. Someone wants to
talk to you.” Nathan informed Cathy.
“Ok… (Went out) ….” Cathy looked
still as she looked at the figure standing outside.
“Do I look like a ghost?” The
person laughed.
“Yah… what are you doing here,
Ralph?” Cathy asked
“Let’s talk… downstairs…” Ralph
said as he walked then Cathy followed.
“What do you want to talk about,
Ralph?” Cathy asked.
“About yesterday… I want to
apolo…”
“Apologize for what… Huh? If it’s
about you finding a new girlfriend, then I don’t care!” Cathy spoke.
“Marge is not my girlfriend.
We’re just dating.” Ralph defended himself.
“So what? I don’t care if you’re
dating or not. I already ended this stupid game, Ralph.” Cathy exclaimed.
“It’s because I want to be with
you again. I regretted choosing Marge. You’ll see Cathy. I’m asking you again
but you remained hard. And if you will find someone, remember this, I’ll break
the two of you!” Ralph walked out but someone appeared before Cathy.
“Hey Cathy, what are you doing
with my boyfriend? Marge appeared.
“So what, Marge, I’m busy so I
need to go first.” Cathy said.
“Wait! Are you avoiding me, huh?
I know you’re Ralph’s first love and girlfriend but I don’t mind. He’s mine
now!” Marge claimed.
“I remember Ralph saying you’re
not his girlfriend.” Cathy laughed.
“Are you still hoping you’ll get
back together again? Think twice because I won’t let you!” Marge sneered and
left.
“Haii… I better get going.” Cathy
turned and
“Hey wait!! It’s me, Blind eyes!”
“Huh?” Cathy looked. “Oh Max.
Ahh! Don’t tell me you were listening err… eavesdropping.” Cathy was startled.
“Uh, not really. I was kind of
staying here when you all came.” Max uttered.
“So let’s just keep this a
secret, ok? Bye!” Cathy started to go but Max stopped her
“Cathy… let’s date!” Max
declared.
“Huh? He-he you must be
dreaming!” Cathy joked.
“I’m not lying. Of all the girls
I’ve dated, you’re the one who tickled my heart…”
“Sorry, but love is a game I’m
not willing to join. If it’s a sport then I decline even now.” Cathy boldly
said.
“I see… what will the others and
Sam say if I will tell them you’re still seeing Ralph. SAM! NATHAN! CATHY IS…”
Max shouted.
“Stop it! Are you testing my
patience? Then this game starts now!! I’m on with your proposal!!” Cathy said
and walked out.
“He-he, someday you’ll for me.
You blind eyes!!” Max grinned.
A
few days after Max proposed to Cathy.
“What a day!” Cathy cried.
“Hey Blind eyes!! Want to go out
tomorrow?” Max asked
“Huh? I don’t want!!” Cathy
disagreed.
“Ehh? I’m asking you already and
yet you’re refusing me, how ironic!!” Max grumbled as he stood up and left the
crowded classroom.
“Come on, Cathy! Go out with him
already. There will be no club meetings this weekend.” Sam approached Cathy
who’s just looking at Max’s walking figure at the soccer field.
“Maybe you’re right, Sam. How’s
Sir Lawrence, anyway?” Cathy asked
“Oh him… nah… I gave him a
letter. But he thought it’s just a simple essay.” Sam looked away trying to
stop her tears from falling.
“Sam, don’t be…. Nathan’s here.
I’m here. All of your friends are here” Cathy assured Sam with a big hug.
“Thank you” Sam responded trying
to show her smile. After they went back home, Cathy called Max that she’ll be
going out with him on Saturday.
On their first date, Cathy
arrived on the said spot earlier than Max, who is still choosing his outfit
that time.
“Where is he anyway? Isn’t guys
supposed to be the ones to be early.” Cathy grumbled “He’s such a girl!!”
After 30 minutes, Max arrived.
“Cathy!! Sorry I’m Late!!!” Max
appeared with a bouquet of flowers. “These are for you.”
“Is this a compensate? Ok I
forgive you.” Cathy smiled.
They
went to the park, mall and at the city’s bay walk. During at night, as Max was
walking Cathy back home. Cathy saw a slight figure of Ralph. Thinking it was
just her imagination, Cathy confronted Max.
“Max… I’ve been thinking about
this for the whole day. Uhmm… can I be your girlfriend..?” Cathy closed her
eyes waiting for Max’s sure answer.
“No!!” Max daringly said.
“Ehh? You like me right? Then why are you refusing
me….” Cathy asked.
“It’s because… it’s inappropriate
for a girl to ask a guy out, so I’m gonna reverse the question. So to ask
again… Will you be my girl?” Cathy trembled as Max held her hand and looked
into her eyes.
“Max. Yes.” Cathy smiled and
hugged him tight. Observing them was really Ralph looking at them with his
fiery glare.
The
next day, Max invited Cathy to eat with him.
“Cathy, uhmm… let’s have lunch
together.” Max invited, blushing.
“Sure.” Cathy agreed and gave out
a cute smile.
“Uhmm… I made this for you,
Cathy.” Max took out and gave her a packed lunch.
“But I have my
own… uh… uh…ok…. I want to try you cooking. (Opened it) You really made this
all by yourself! Oh my!! You’re good in cooking while me… I don’t even know how
to cook one egg.” Cathy frowned.
“Nah, forget it
already. Let’s eat and enjoy!!” Max took his spoon and ate. After they ate
lunch, they agreed to spend the remaining time together.
“Cathy,
let’s go to the soccer field. We still have 30 minutes left.” Max asked
“Sure, I’d
love to!” Cathy followed Max as they held hands together.
While sitting on the green grass of
the fields. Max tickled Cathy. While the two are playing, Ralph was passing by.
He was looking at them. Cathy tripped but Max caught her with care and love.
Cathy turned and saw Ralph. Upon seeing Ralph looking at their awkward
position, she broke apart with Max. Max who seemed to follow Cathy’s gaze
towards Ralph, looked annoyed.
“Cathy,
are you afraid to show Ralph that we’re dating already.” Max questioned.
“Max… it’s
not what you think…. I’m …” Cathy tried to reason out.
“Really…
if that’s what you think…I can’t change that. So I don’t care!!!” Max sauntered
without even looking at Cathy.
“Wait!!!
Max…” Cathy tried to follow but Max quickened his pace.
Max went to a resto bar. He didn’t
attend their class sessions in the afternoon. Cathy who’s bothered for the
whole day went to his apartment even though it was raining very hard that time.
She’s soaked wet because of the rain. After an hour, Max finally arrived. He
was shocked to see Cathy standing by his apartment and the worst part- it was
raining. She could’ve been sick because of the heavy downpour.
“Cathy?
It’s raining!! Why are you here? Come on let’s go inside. You’ll get sick.” Max
grabbed her and fumbled in his pockets
for his keys. Upon entering, Cathy noticed how neat his apartment. He’s just
living alone. His parents were in abroad. Only his grandparents supported him.
Max gave her a clean shirt and a cup of hot chocolate.
“Max, I’m sorry about this afternoon. I
don’t mean to hurt you. It’s not because I’m still in love with Ralph. I’m just
shock, that’s all. I’m so sorry.” Cathy knelt before him.
“Cathy, stand up. You don’t have to
apologize. I’ve pondered about it the whole afternoon. We both have to adjust
so … we’re still together right?” Max smiled.
“Max… Sure.” Cathy hugged him. She stayed
there until the rain stopped. Before she left, she gave him a small peck on the
cheek. Max blushed as Cathy went home.
“I’ve been kissed by many girls before… but
why am I so nervous when I’m with her. I should be the one to initiate a kiss
but I can’t. Argh!! Max!! Wake up!! Why are you blushing beet red like a girl
who just received her first kiss. Gotta get my hanky and wiped my cheek so that
I can keep her kiss. Argh!!! Why am I like this!!!???” Max dashed inside his apartment.
He couldn’t sleep that night.
He was mulling over if Cathy really changed him for he was now a really
different person. He’s focused and loyal to one single girl now compared
before, he’s such a playboy.
The
next few days were busy days for the students. They’re preparing for their
intramurals which was also part of their PE exam and the students were expected
to practice their chosen field. Cathy was part of the volleyball team while Max
joined the badminton league. They had a separate court so they hardly see each
other. During the volleyball practice, Cathy got hit by the ball and lost her
consciousness. All of her teammates were panicking but out from the crowd
appeared a person. That person brought Cathy to the infirmary. After some time,
Cathy woke up.
“Huh?” Cathy was shocked to see a person
beside her who’s caressing her hair.
“Thank goodness!! You’re awake!”
“Ralph? Why are you here?” Cathy asked.
“I brought you here, Cathy. I’m very
worried, don’t you know? And I’m so eager to tell you this. I still love you
Cathy. I really regretted that I broke up with you. Please come back to me,
Cathy. I will take good care of you. I will mend the scar that I gave before as
long as you return to me.” Ralph hugged her. Cathy could feel the beat of his heart.
She’s falling for him again.
“Ralph… I… I…” Ralph kissed her and on that
time she felt her heart beat with him.
“Cathy!!!” Max arrived and opened the door.
He was devastated to see Ralph and Cathy kissing. “What’s the meaning of this,
huh?”
“Max… I … I’m…” Cathy was stuttering, unable
to say the right words.
“I’m not stupid, Cathy!!! I’m not also blind
or that dense who will think this whole thing never happened. I’m also a person
not a toy to play with. I do have feelings. I’m not a robot who will just wait
for you to manipulate with. I also have a heart; it’s beating only for you. No
wonder why you can’t love me, hug me… you… because you’re still in love with
that damn guy!! All this time… have you ever considered my feelings? I felt I’m
just being used. And I’ve never heard you say you love me…” Max bawled out
releasing every pain and anger that stirred inside him.
“Max…” Ralph said.
Max, who’s very angry to hear his voice,
punched Ralph right into his face which caused him stumbled on the ground. Max
grinned coldly and looked at Cathy.
“I remember you saying that love is a stupid
game. Heh!! Now I know… and uhmm Cathy... (Reached out his hand right in front
of her and slowly gave a boo sign or a thumbs down) WE”RE OVER!!!” Max
gave a smirk and left the place.
“Max!! Wait!!” Cathy cried. She wanted to
follow him. She stood up ready to run after him. As she ran towards the door,
Ralph grabbed her hand and hugged her. She couldn’t break away from him.
“Max… I wanted to follow you… but … my body
told me to be with Ralph now…” Cathy cried. Her heart now confused who to
follow: Max or Ralph.
After
a week, Max who was seated beside Cathy decided to exchange seats with Nathan.
“Hey Nathan, Can I seat there? I can’t take
the ambiance here.” Max walked towards Nathan who agreed to exchange seats with
him.
During
that day’s lunch time, Cathy ate together with Sam.
“What happened, Cathy? Are you in a fight
with Max? (No answer from Cathy) Don’t tell me you broke up already?” Sam asked
Cathy who didn’t touched her food.
“Yah… I’m confused… Ralph… Max…. I don’t
know!”
“You’re such a fool, Cathy. It’s such a
loss. Don’t you know that when Max heard you got hit by the ball. He got
worried and he even gave up his P.E. preliminary test just to go to you and
this had become!” Sam said in a very disappointed tone.
“Sam… (Cries) I’m really a dupe! I don’t
know who I will choose. Sam... I miss him! I miss Max but…”
“Cathy, if you’ll ask me…choose…”
RING!!!!!!!!
The
conversation was interrupted by the sound of the school bell. After dismissal,
Marge talked to Ralph at the court.
“Ralph, why are you going back to that
girl?” Marge asked.
“It’s because I realized that I love her.
But I doubt her feelings for me.” Ralph said.
“Oh really…” Marge looked at him.
“I thought that when I will go back to her
side again, she’ll accept me. But it turned out I was wrong. I thought I only
owned her heart but I discovered that half of her heart now belongs to Max. I
can no longer compete but I won’t give up.” Ralph sated.
“Is that true?” Max came out of the storage
room near the court.
“Max?” Ralph was stunned to see Max.
“Ralph, if what you said was true that
Cathy’s confused on who to choose. Then let’s decide it for her instead. This
coming Saturday, let” meet at the field. Let’s fight! Whoever who will lose
will leave Cathy’s side forever!!!!” Max challenged.
“I agree!”
Ralph smiled and left Marge and Max. Ralph on the other hand, approached
Cathy who was just sitting at the bench. “Cathy, I will win you back!!” Ralph
said with a grin.
Cathy on the other hand was shocked to hear
his words. She decided to go back to the classroom. As she was about to open
the door, she heard voices inside. Voices that belonged to Max and Marge, they
were talking.
“You know Max, on my part, I really don’t
like Cathy. Of course, she’s my rival towards Ralph. But I respect the fact
that she’s also your ex-girlfriend and I know several stupid ways of love-
loving that person, sacrificing everything for that person, hurting that
person, and lastly in the end giving up on that person. Fun isn’t it?” Marge
said to Max who was looking at the window.
“Heh! Are you implying that I’m planning to
lose intentionally? He-he! I will never lose to that loser!!” Max said in a
very offensive tone.
“Remember that Cathy’s on the line. She may
like or hate the results after.”
“Don’t worry… I know who could make her
happy.” Max looked at her.
Cathy,
who was listening that time, fell on the floor and cried.
Saturday
morning. Ralph arrived earlier compared to Max. Marge was with them. She was
the one who called Cathy to come. When Max arrived, they fought immediately.
Neither of them wanted to back out and give up. It lasted for more that an hour
until Max noticed something’s wrong. Knowing Ralph’s weakness, he finally decided.
On
Cathy’s side, she knew about the fight since Marge informed her. But she woke
up late. She hastily went to the court hoping she could stop them.
“Max… Ralph… don’t do this. Argh!! I don’t
know who to choose- my first love and boyfriend or the one who remained in my
side on my days of loneliness and grief….” She ran towards the field. She was
very late that time and only saw two figures standing.
“Ralph, are you ok?” Cathy asked trying to
ignore the result of the fight.
“Aren’t you going to ask for the results?”
Ralph asked her.
“Ehh… uh…” Cathy was trying to change the
topic.
“You know…. He won. I just don’t understand
why he pretended to get weak. He faked a limp and said he’s not strong enough
to protect you. He-he! It’s because of that, my view about love changed. I
thought you could get that person with the use of your physical might and
strength but I guess not. It’s because of sacrifice that we could love and be
loved. He-he!! Did you know I felt like praising him for his great love for you
which is greater than mine?” Ralph pretended to smile.
“Ralph….” Cathy looked at him.
“I realized that even though I may win this
fight. It’s still useless if I can’t receive your love which is the greatest
gift of all. What’s the use of getting you physically if your heart belongs to
Max? I hate to say this but I let you go Cathy.” Ralph turned away.
“Ralph, thank you very much!!” Cathy ran and
tried to find Max. She called his cell phone but no answer. “Where are you Max?
Don’t leave me…” She went to his apartment. She knocked and knocked but no one
opened it. The landlady arrived.
“Excuse me, Ma’am. Where is the one staying
in this apartment? I called him but ….”
“If you’re referring to Mr. Max then I’m
sorry. He already moved out of this apartment. I heard that his parents took
him with them to California .”
The landlady informed and left.
“No… I’m late. I’m very late.” Cathy felt
her body collapsed on the floor. She wanted to cry thinking it’s her fault that
Max left.
After
five years, Cathy, Sam, Nathan, Ralph and Marge graduated from college. Ralph
decided to start a new life with Marge. Cathy on the other hand remained
single. Of course, boyfriends come and go but none of them were serious. She
couldn’t take to enter a serious relationship if she can’t apologize to Max
herself. But one day during work, she received an anonymous text from a total
stranger.
“Stranger:
Hi! Can you be my text mate?”
Cathy who read it replied with a question on
who was this person.
“Stranger:
I’m a girl actually. My name’s XaM. Can we meet tomorrow if you have time? I’m
not joking. Please. I’m just desperate to have a new friend. TT.TT.”
Cathy agreed thinking it’s just a small
meeting with her.
On that day, Cathy arrived first at their
meeting spot.
“Is this situation familiar? Have I done
this before? Where is that girl anyway?” Cathy grumbled as she sat on the
bench.
“Are you waiting for me?” a familiar voice
said that startled her.
“Huh? (Turned her head) M… Max…?”
“Yeah, I’m actually the one who texted you.
He-he. But I actually intended to meet you because… I want to apologize for
leaving you behind. That time, I felt I’m not ready to be with you. So that’s
why I went to California
to become mature and intelligent so that I can be worthy of you. So will you
accept me again?” Max held her hand.
“Max, sure!! I love you.”
“I love you too.” Max leaned down and kissed
her.
The
two got back together. They had their wedding a year after.
The end!!
